Not exactly sure how it worked, but he would basically raise sponsor dollars to participate on the lower tours to cover living and travel expenses, and in return, the sponsors received a chunk of any earnings he would make. Not sure who the sponsors were, but would imagine they were knowledgeable enough of the game to know what probabilities there were that they would get their investment returned, and give a young player a shot at trying to rise up the ranks.
