This is the same message every program will be giving

Multiple coaches said the same thing last year, and they're lauded for it. You can't run a football program if you allow your players to ponder, "coach, I think, I might be happier if I was the starting QB for Alabama". "son, your not even a starting defensive back for Virginia Tech". . . . Player's mom calls coaching state, "my son says you were mean to him." "maam, we expect the best from all of our athletes. your son is on this team, but he has to earn his playing time". mom, "well you're not going to talk to me like that. I'm taking my son to visiit Ohio State and Penn State, and we're entering the transfer portal and we'll either play for Alabama, Penn State or the Buckeyes". Coach, "who is this we".

Bottom line, Virginia Tech can't be the level of program we want it to be if the coaching staff allows players to only have one foot in". Fuente is 100% right. If you have a scholarship to play football, you have to push to get on the field. No gimmes, no givens. Second, you're a student athlete, so even if your college football career doesn't materialize the way you dreamed it would, you still have a valuable college degree. That's it, that's the message to potential recruits, and there isn't a better athletic program in college football that would tell its players any different.
