Help me understand Covid-19 and the "peak" everyone keeps referencing on tv

I am following the virus news very closely but don't understand how our peak, depending on city/state, is still potentially 2-5 weeks away.

If the general population, on average, is social distancing or isolating more than 2 weeks ago, how will the virus continue to spread at a faster rate than it did over the prior two weeks? The range for symptoms is 2-14 days with the average being in the 5-6 day range. So, anyone who was infected 2 weeks ago or prior are already symptomatic if they are going to be. On average, the people infected last week would be symptomatic already.

As people practice social distancing and are less in public areas where they would spread it to massive groups of people, how will the spread grow at a faster rate? Wouldn't our saturation be at its highest point before social distancing?

Also, this is possibly my first post ever in the Lounge. Wish it were in better circumstances. Stay well!
