Why is there a coin shortage?

I suppose I could google it.

On a side note...I was at my neighborhood Speedway getting my Big-Assed Soda (BAS) the other day, and I asked the manager, whom I've gotten to know since I'm sort of like their "Norm", if he really was desperate for coins. He has plastered coin shortage signs at the registers encouraging customers to pay with exact change or by card. He affirmed that the situation is dire. So I told him that I have a shoe box or two of rolled coins if he wants them. He does. When I got home, I counted what I've rolled already and stored away and it comes to over $1000. Today, I worked on denting the gallon pickle jars of pennies. I don't know if he realizes what he has agreed to.
