We've done a few lung transplants and I've seen some pts make it off ECMO
I'm a resident at the U of Florida in Gainesville and our medical ICU is probably 80% COVID's right now. We've started transferring pt's to the cardiac ICU to save MICU beds, but ICU beds in general are becoming scarce. We probably have 80-100 COVID's in house right now and I'd venture a guess that 2/3rds of patients I see requiring ICU level care ultimately die.
Haven't caught the virus yet personally, but I know a good number of fellow residents/fellows/nurses who have and the consensus seems to be that the flu was worse symptomatically from those who have experienced both.
Personally, I'm not worried if I get it myself.since I'm younger and fit and can count on one hand the number of patients under 35 I've seen die from the virus, but I'd religiously wear a mask and socially distance if I was overweight or at increased risk for clots.
