You don't become a 4 or 5 star player without trying.
These guys are the weight room warriors. These are the ones gifted by God with physical tools that are superior to other players - it's hard to find guys who don't utilize those skills when they have them. These are the guys who study the game and live and breathe and bleed and sweat football. These are the guys who have understood, in many cases, that football is their best way to a successful life and are making it their career at an early age. These are the guys who put extra time in learning routes, plays, their opponents. These are the guys that land in the NFL. Yes, a tiny amount of them don't have success, but to insinuate that MOST 4 and 5 stars are just lazy bums with attitude issues is a classic example of your maroon and orange goggles creating a bias that leads to thinking along the lines of this: "I love VT --> VT doesn't get top recruits --> therefore there's something wrong with top recruits."

Truth is, we're a marginally attractive program in the middle of the pack of teams in middle of the pack conference. We have ZERO national titles, and one appearance because we luckily landed a QB recruit, the likes of which we'll never have again.
Am I disputing the fact that Fu and VT, collectively and separately, have made their living off 3 stars? No, you're absolutely right. But let's not have similar mindset to the high-school girl who asks a guy out, is rejected, and claims she didn't want to date him anyway. We'd LOVE more 4 stars and this board would explode if we landed a 5 star. But come on, let's not act like they'd be bad for our program, let's just admit we're a slightly above average team. Some would call us "high functioning mediocrity."

That being said, I love this team and I'm so excited for the season.
