Virginia Tech football was built in the shadow of Bill Brill's abusive pen
People that have been Tech fans before the bowl game run understand that Virginia Tech operates in a hostile media environment. Once Bill Brill retired as the Sports Editor for the Roanoke Times, the paper gingerly accepted its role as Virginia Tech's home town newspaper. But the fact is the media has never embraced Virginia Tech.
That understood, Virginia Tech coaches have to hold off the media because ultimately, even the Roanoke/Richmond papers are not about promoting Virginia Tech athletics. They want headlines and click bait. It was that way in 1990 and its still that way in 2020.
The papers have "friendly" beat reporters today. But these reporters will always be more eager to break the Farley story than a positive, all is happy piece in Blacksburg.
It is BTW unfortunate that Brill's writings have been buried with him. His typewriter was a dagger and a long sword when he covered the Hokies.
Bottom line, the media can't be trusted to be your friend. Give them a story and they will run with it. That is their job.
