In my prime, a great ride up gateway would be stopping to hike a section

maybe once the entire way. You had to get pretty lucky to do that, too. Just a simple, unlucky bounce, or slip could easily kill all momentum and make you put a foot down. Very challenging. Oh, I hiked a lot with my bike yesterday... Yes, I remember Jacobs ladder fondly. Want to get back on that route too.
