William and Mary situation
The saga of Olympic sports being cut then reinstated at William and Mary could be a cautionary tale. Swimming for example: men's and women's swimming was cut and then women's was reinstated, but not men's I don't know all the details, but I am sure Title IX has something to do with it. If you are going to have a women's team, you need coaches and a facility to train. Scholarships are not an issue, I don't believe the men's team has athletic scholarships. There exists a strong Foundation with alum support for the sport. And we are not talking an insignificant program here. W+M men's team won the CAA last year. That meet was actually held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. I noticed yesterday while I was watching the VT Intrasquad meet, that the W+M men's relays set POOL records last year at CAC in 200 free, 2 and 400 medley. CAC has hosted the ACC Championship and powerhouse teams like UVA, NC State, OSU, Fla State, Penn State, but the pool records in these 3 relays are from a program that set them last year (with little to no schollies) and their just reward. . . elimination.
OBTW. . . at yesterday's meet, freshman Emma Atkinson set pool and team records in the backstroke events.
