Last time I bought a new (to me) car, instead of just trading in, I cleaned

up my old car and spent a few hours shopping it around to a few local car dealers. Everyone knows Carmax buys cars, but so will many dealers. Of course it has to be something they'll put on their lot, so it can't be too bad a beater. Most dealer offers were good for either 7 or 30 days, so you can have that in your pocket when you buy. You still may not get as much as a private sale on your own. But it may be better than a direct trade in, and no risk and little hassle for it.

Last beater I got rid of I just donated to Goodwill.
