Shamed into a CR Board Post. Here goes
I posted on the Men's hoops board earlier this evening and was informed that my presence was required over here due to the lack of activity.
So here are some random thoughts about the ACC and the ACC Network.
First - Does anyone think that this will be the first and only year that Notre Dame plays in an ACC Championship game? This will surprise many, but I actually think that Notre Dame will be full ACC member #15 and will leave football independence behind. This season has proven that their lack of conference independence has hardly hurt their brand and that they are as close to a National Championship as they have been in a very long time. The ACC gives them a pathway to the playoff and that is good for golden dome business. The ultimate factor with their choice to remain in the ACC for football will likely be more Covid related. ND actually has to share their NBC money with the league this year, placing them in the same, money losing boat as every other college athletics program due to zero attendance at games. Since the ACC gave them a home and a schedule for this season, I think they are going to have to pay back the league by joining full time. Just a guess on my point but, I may be right.
15 is a very bad number for a league with a division of 8 and a division of 7. I foresee ND joining the Coastal as the dream of a Clemson/ND matchup in a championship game is too exciting to not engineer by the geniuses in Greensboro. Obviously, the Atlantic division is going to need an "8" to even things out and this is where everything gets very interesting.
Who could be ACC #16? Hmmmmm. Will it be from the Group of 5? Will it be from another P5 league?
As for the ACC Network, are you tired of the steady diet of Tac Shaver and Spurtle ads? Does the Irish Slicer give you nightmares? Have you been thinking about how you should buy the tri-lamp from Bell and Howell?
Every time you see one of these ads, it is due to the local cable or satellite provider's lack of success in selling a local ad that would be placed over top of the Spurtle ad. For 2 minutes of every hour, the local cable system can interrupt the program stream and run ads, which typically make some easy cash for the cable operator. When nothing is sold, the network usually runs a spot underneath that will be seen only if the local operator has an empty spot.
Those Spurtle and Tac Shaver ads likely cost 1 cent to 1 dollar to run in those slots. The cheap ad gets thousands of impressions just because the local carrier cannot sell over top of it.
Let's be honest, if the ACC Network was doing big ratings, those spots would be sold. Until the ratings come in, we are going to see a lot more of Tac Shaver Guy with the beard.
OK. I did it, I posted on the CR board. Now, who is with me???
