Unless the team unanimously voted 85 to 0, I bet it created some internal differences of opinion. Purely speculative on my part. Big picture, I'm all for getting "buy in" and hearing everyone's thoughts but leaving a decision to someone who isn't at the top is generally a bad leadership idea.
