The question is timing...


There's a lot of understandable fan speculation. In the absence of data, people will draw their own conclusions.

Based on info available, it appears Fuente asked the team if they wanted to play, requiring a near unanimous vote. That sounds like a bad idea as it's hard to get 5 people to agree on something, let alone an entire team of 18 to 22 year olds. Now, if there were tons of players who proactively said "I don't want to play" and it forced Fuente's hand to "ask for a vote", then I think fans would be more understanding of declining the bowl. The flip side is fans would probably be far more concerned why players proactively said they didn't want to play. The net result either way is "players don't want to be together and play another 17 days". Any way you slice it, that is concerning, especially since there's been talk in previous years of lack of team unity, and it also ends a nearly 3 decade old tradition.
