Yep. Never ceases to amaze me.
A guy, completely on his own, decides that it's a good idea to get drunk and drive around with a gun in his car. Said guy deservedly faces consequences for that very bad decision. And yet, so far, I've read these gems on this board:
- it's VT's fault for not educating students better
- it's excusable because the person in question grew up in a rough part of Louisiana
- it's the cop's fault for "hunting DUIs"
- it's no big deal because all college kids drink and drive, most just don't get caught
I would love to think that these kinds of excuses happen only when the accused is a high profile athlete for "our" side, but in reality this is a massive problem extending way beyond college athletics. We, as a society, seem to have completely flipped the switch from the idea of personal responsibility. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said, we have become expert at "defining deviancy down".
