That's my point...
...the profile of SU, Duke and UNC is connected to 4 coaches: Boeheim (since 1976), Coach K (since 1980) and Dean Smith (1961-1997) and Roy Williams (2003-2021). Bill Guthridge (80-28) who succeeded Smith was reasonably successful but Matt Doherty (53-43, 2001-2003) is more indicative of the norm as to how difficult it is to replicate success. For that matter, I think Dean Smith was overrated. To wit: Smith won 2 - NC's in 36 years. Roy Williams won 3 in 18 seasons, 1 more NC in half as many seasons as Smith. What's more, Smith didn't put UNC on the map. His predecessor, Frank McGuire (163-58, 1952-61, including 32-0 and a NC in 1957) did. The handwriting is on the wall. Coach K is 74 and Duke missed the NCAA Dance this year. Sooner or later, he's history. Boeheim will last as long as Buddy is eligible (2023). Whoever replaces those 3 will have BIG shoes to fill. Larranaga is 71 and his best season as a coach was 2005-2006, @ GUM when the Patriots, improbably, made Final 4. His best season @ Miami was his second, 2012-13 when the 'canes finished 29-7/15-3, good for 1st place in the ACC regular season and the NCAA Sweet 16. His last NCAA Dance was 2017-18 and even if there was a Dance last year, Miami would not have qualified. Overall, Larranaga is 200-130/91-90. Will Miami return to mediocrity post-Larranaga (194-155 between 2000 and 2011)? Hamilton is 72. I think we're well-positioned for the next decade or so, if the current trend under Mike Young can be sustained. Who disagrees? There will be at least 2-new coaches in the ACC next season, @ BC and UNC. Sooner, rather than later, Coach K (74) is going to hang it up. Another season like this last one could force his hand. Then what? Expectations will be high in Cameron...
