“Light bulb moment ”
They won’t fund any unless they have too.
The current system is becoming more unstable as big donors will most likely not continue ponying up the big bucks for kids that see college as placeholder for bigger things to come in a couple of years.
Why finance a farm team system for the NBA, NFL or European franchises, who will make $B with NO investment?
Up until now, we have been concerned about the portal, etc., but at the end of the day, it will be the big donors that will determine what happens.
So we may be looking at a complete collapse of the current system.
I’m not saying that this will be happen, but it’s a risk.
So whatever the future landscape looks like, the NBA and European farm team model may not be part of that.
So there is a possible scenario that they will have to get involved at some level just to protect their interests.
Whatever the case, the sports landscape is changing very rapidly and I doubt it will be recognizable in 15 to 20 years.
We are well past the point where athletes come primarily to a college for the academics (well, I guess Auburn is the exception 🙄).
