The portal will dramatically change the college coaches toolbox.


Skills which were an afterthought will become critical and other skills - like actually developing a player's game will become less important.

It’ll be more like coaching pros than college players. I think we’re going to see a bunch more old school Roy Williams’ depart the game in the next five years because they are uninterested in or unwilling to adapt to (or even acknowledge) the new priorities.

I don’t feel the least bit sorry for these coaches. But I do think it will make college athletics worse and I think the athletes on the whole will ultimately get the short of the stick, not the long end (although they and the media probably won’t even realize it).

I think it will end up a net negative for everybody - athletes, schools, coaches, fans, sports media. But in a few years, it’ll be the new norm and they’ll make things even worse with more improvements.
