Paperless ticketing will change attendance

For the past two years I've lived literally two blocks up the street from PNC Park and a 15 minute walk to Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

In 2019, it was easy for me to walk down the street almost any time I wanted and buy a Pirates ticket on the street for $10 and sometimes less, go in, and sit almost anywhere I wanted. There's always plenty of empty seats unless it's a weekend or holiday game, or maybe a rare game against the Yankees or something of that nature. The ultimate score was when Free Shirt Friday coincided with Dollar Dog Night. For about $25, I could get a ticket, a free t-shirt, a couple of hot dogs and a big Coke with at least one refill (and more when they forget to remove the sticker), and watch big league baseball in one of the most beautiful ballparks in America. Sure, the Pirates are not very good, but they're my team. I'm not a huge baseball fan, but the circumstances allowed me to stay the whole game or just a few innings. Once, I went just to get a free giveaway, stayed long enough to have a drink, and came home.

The weather was not great during the Bucs' first homestand so I did not try to go. I may go next week. But I wonder how easy it will be to get the cheap tickets, when they are now paperless.

In 2019, I caught about half of the Steelers' home games and, about half the time, I was able to get tickets on the street at or below face value - which is almost never possible on StubHub.

Compare that with the Pens, which are not only the hottest ticket and best show in Pittsburgh, but which used mostly paperless ticketing even before the pandemic. It is very hard to find cheap tickets to see the Penguins, particularly after December.
