Connolly had been through the NC State lineup nearly three times, having faced 24 batters. There is risk at 99 pitches and letting hitters see him a fourth time. He is effective but not necessarily an overpowering pitcher.

In two of his other long appearances, he faced 25 batters vs Clemson and 24 vs Georgia Tech. He threw 99 pitches vs GT also, and 99 is his high (twice) in a game this season (although stats for Clemson game do not show his number of pitches thrown against 25 batters).
