Sounds like your son has a lot of great things going on. Swimming is great, but so is music and other pursuits. As long as he's happy and on his way, you are all good to go.

Interesting you mention your son's inability to take criticism - that is exactly my middle kid. On one hand, it has fueled her in a Michael Jordan kind of way to high achievement. In other ways, she lets others' opinions get in her way and becomes very difficult to get through to. It's something she really needs to work on. She had the absolute golden freestyle when she was 12, but a muscle imbalance and asthma wrecked it, and she was incredibly uncoachable to fix it because she takes criticism as a personal attack, not an opportunity to improve.

Enjoy the Summer and see how it works out. Worse case scenario is your son has mastered an important skill in swimming that he can enjoy his entire life. I didn't have the opportunity to swim until I married a swimmer/coach and have gotten so beaten up it's my best form of exercise these days.
