There is a small window

between end of child care and start of college when you may be able to save a little, only to have college costs later consume those savings and a whole lot more. The bigger window for me was between college and retirement, when expenses were way down and income was quite a bit higher than it had been before the kids were born. The key of course is to get the kids self-sufficient after four years of college and not have them living at home for years thereafter.
