Like I said in a comment above, the powers that be obviously think the arrangement with ND is a net positive or they wouldn't do it. ND plays it hand very well and if I were in their shoes, I would do the exact same thing.

As a fan I think it is unfair, but the mystique of ND is a powerful thing. When I would ask my late father-in-law what he thought about VT's rise to national football fame in the 90's, he would say, "Get back to me when you beat ND in South Bend." He measured all college football success against ND. I so wish he had been alive when VT did win its first ever game against the Irish in South Bend in 2016.
