2021 commit Albright
There's been some speculation on the board about whether top Hokies LHP commit Mason Albright will go pro or enroll at VT. I've linked to a May MLB Pipeline article that lists him now as this year's #115 draft prospect. I've also seen him ranked as high as the #102 pick by ESPN, and #133 by Prospects Live.
As others have noted, whether a player goes pro or attends college often depends on a wide range of factors, including whether he's drafted by a team that's willing to pay the bonus amount targeted by his family. I have no idea what the Albright family's target may be, or how motivated he is either to attend VT or go pro right away. But as a hypothetical comparison, if Albright were to be selected #115 as forecast by MLB Pipeline, he would go to the Giants. The #115 pick has a slot value of $502,300 - although the Giants have flexibility to sign that player for a larger or smaller bonus depending on their overall draft strategy. For example, Carson Taylor was selected #130 by the Dodgers in last year's draft and signed for about $398,000 even though that pick had a slot value of about $434,000.
Even if Mason Albright doesn't go as high as #115 (which would be a 4th round pick), the slot values for picks remain >$300,000 into the early picks of the 6th round (through #168), >$200,000 all the way to pick #218 near the end of the 7th round, and >$142,000 through the end of the 10th round.
Hopefully he loves VT and the current staff and will enroll regardless of where he's picked. But that's a lot of $$ for a young guy to turn down.
