Hawks fall into two categories, accipters and buteos.


I used to think the way you tell them apart was from the way they flew, but someone pointed out it's the way they're built. Accipters have shorter wings and longer tails, where buteos have longer wings and shorter tails.

They are also members of the raptor family, along with eagles and vultures.
