Props to Grant Umberger
Very nice write up by D1 Baseball’s Aaron Fitt about Grant & his NECBL All-Star outing. Subscription req’d but here’s an excerpt:
“Last fall, Virginia Tech’s coaches thought lefthander Grant Umberger had a chance to break into the rotation as a true freshman in the spring…. Umberger is progressing nicely this summer for Newport, posting a 1.63 ERA and a 21-5 K-BB mark in 11 innings, and he looked strong in a scoreless inning at the all-star game. A physical southpaw with a high three-quarters slot, Umberger attacked the zone at 90-94, pitching mostly at 91-92, and his elite spin efficiency lends his heater some extra giddy-up through the top of the zone. His second pitch is a quality changeup at 83 mph with good bottom. Last fall he showed a slurve at 72-73, but in the all-star game he instead threw a true slider at 85 mph. The pitch’s increased power is a good sign, but it could still use more bite. As Umberger continues to refine his slider and his overall pitchability, he should take on a prominent role for the Hokies, and he is definitely a prospect of interest for the 2023 draft.”
