The issue with the 12 team format is that it has byes for the top four seats. That isn't the problem but by having a bye, those top four teams miss out on the revenue and exposure of a Host game in the play off. The first round of the play off is at the higher rated seed home field. Would the top four really think it was a good idea to give that up?
I don't.
I think the play off is either an 8 team or 16 team set up and right now everyone wants more not less.
Every other play off seeds every conference champ in auto bid based on rankings. That is a set precedent in every other sport and I see no way around it not being used here. As we have ten conferences at this time, that leaves 6 open seats to be determinized by some means. I don't think 8 does enough for those in favor of a play off and 12 cause the top four to lose hosting a game, because the second round games are in bowls.
