There has to be more to it

The Alliance claims to be simply pursuing a scheduling arrangement among the three conferences. I think that idea is fine, but woefully insufficient to have much effect on the SEC. It doesn't require much imagination to envision the parties brainstorming schemes to bust the hold of ESPN on the ACC and for the more attractive properties to elevate themselves to the B1G. Surely the SEC has designs on some ACC programs too, and those talks are likely happening as well, even while ESPN wants to keep the ACC right where they are. UNC, UVA and various combinations of many, or few, programs have to be plotted.

Who knows if the GoR can be gamed? Who knows how much it would cost?

A union of the PAC and the B1G could be managed quite easily. Both have new media deals coming up. Both own equity in their conference cable networks. I believe that the issues of travel for sports can be managed with some creative course scheduling and virtual classes for athletes while they are on days-long "away" tours. If these two conferences don't merge, it won't be because of distance.

The conspiracy theorist in me sees much more going on than meets the eye.
