All evidence Babcock had to work with at the time suggested...


...that Fuente was a good hire. He was building a successful program at Memphis, he was being pursued by many other programs, and he seemed to hit it off with Bud Foster and convinced him to stick around. At the time it was almost unanimously lauded as a successful hire.

Obviously it's not working out, and I agree with One4VT - the part that Babcock screwed up was extending Fuente's contract after there were already signs that Fuente might not pan out like everyone hoped. That is an expensive mess and basically just delays the inevitable.
