Roger was awesome as usual

He is one of the most entertaining speakers that we have at the Sports Club.

He tells some great stories and doesn’t mind making fun of himself.

Some of the highlights from Monday night.

*He considers himself “one of the luckiest guys in the world.” He’s been doing the thing he loves for 25 years. His “glass is overflowing.”

*He thinks Cassell Colisium is one of “the loudest venues in the country.” He tries to warn young officials what to expect when they do a game in Blacksburg, but it has to be experienced.

*He thinks Jim Phillips will be good for the ACC. He “is young with a lot of new ideas.” He is a “hands on commissioner,” which is a good thing. He may even move the ACC office.

*The new transfer rules have really changed the game. A player could be playing for Team A one day and then gets mad, and could potentially be playing for Team B a few days later. Roger likes to build relationships with players, but it is becoming harder and harder to do since 55% of the players have left the conference since last season.

*He would like to become the Supervisor of Officials one day and if he did so, he would “hire great people who are good refs” as opposed to great refs who perhaps have egos.

*His advice to the young people in the audience is (1) every day, do something nice for someone, (2) surround yourself with positive people, and (3) don’t forget where you come from. On the third point, someone pointed out that Roger comes back and does the ODAC Tournament every year because that’s the conference who gave him his start in the business.

A really good guy.
