You are right that the Big East Era did have a rough start. Pitt was the BCS rep the first year.

2004 - Pitt #25
2005 - WVU #5
2006 - Louisville #6
2007 - WVU #6
2008 - Cincinnati #17
2009 - Cincinnati #8
2010 - Connecticut Unranked

Had WVU in 2007 not stumbled in their final game losing to Pitt, they were ranked #2 and set to play #1 Ohio State for the national championship. That Ohio State team lost 14-41 to Florida. SO, it is pretty likely WVU would have won that as well.

As for the average ranking of the Big East in that era, 9 and usually with zero or one loss.
