Oddity known as ESPN
We have a good example right before us. Bama is potentially a 2-loss team after the SEC CCG. ESPN through their on-air non-stop barking about the quality of Bama act as cheerleaders. We saw this two years from them regarding Bama and last year Herbie got the playoff to reconstruct the rules so Ohio State could get in. ESPN plays the largest role in all of this.
So, we have a 2 loss Bama being ranked highly not because they deserve but because ESPN likes how the money flows from and to Bama and back to ESPN's pockets. Cincinnati is going to likely be undefeated and should be in but will be left out.
The only way to be fair, and I have promoted this idea for some time is that every Division 1 conference champion is in and NO ONE else is. You win your conference you go to the party. How the seeds are set is another matter and there are many ways to set up that. But no one is left out that does not CHOOSE to be left out. Notre Dame, if they are left out are left out because they WANT to be. Same for the academies and others.
Deserving is not the word you should use, EARN is. You win your conference then your team was good when it mattered most, it does not have to be pretty, it just has to abide by the same rules every other conference chares with yours.
