I think I’m beginning to see how a pod alignment would work

Hypothetically, assume ND and WVU were to join the ACC. Each pod would play each team in its own pod every year. Each team would also have a permanent rival from each of the other pods. Finally, each team in a pod would play every other team in another pod on a rotating basis (not duplicating the rivalry game from that pod). That adds up to nine conference games a year. Let’s say the pods were as follows:

ND
Syracuse
BC
Miami

VT
WVU
Pitt
Louisville

UNC
NC State
Duke
UVA

Clemson
GT
FSU
Wake

VT’s permanent rivals from each of the other pods would be: Miami, UVA, and GT. The remaining three games on the schedule would be the non-rivals from another pod, rotating each year.
