Most of us are all in on Campbell (myself included) just remember 5 years ago he was a coach at mighty Toledo and had never even seen the inside of a P5 stadium in any coaching position. He proved to be good hire in Ames. Some guys just have leadership abilities that fit and I think Huff is a fit here. Would we be “early” on him, sure, but he checks more boxes than most who are TRULY available. Everyone wants a guy with massive P5 success, guess what, every program wants that but that won’t exist for us this year. We’ve discussed this many times, he is great with fans, donors, players, media, p5 connections, disciplined, worked with legends and an ace recruiter. He absolutely has NOT proven he’s an excellent game day coach but I like what I see overall and believe he would improve and have a great impact here. Many say we can’t win without recruiting, without more donor money, without big program experience, well he has all of that. I’d rather hire a guy who doesn’t have to fix his personality, that is harder than improving your game day skills. Would we win 10 in year 1 here? of course not… increase interest and attention in VT nationally.. I think yes.. If we can be patient while he improves our recruiting, I would expect a jump from year 1 to 2 to 3 etc. More people miss than succeed in this business so the odds are in your favor if you downvote huff, but I love his upside. The guy would put himself on every college football show and impress the nation, he understands getting the name out there is huge. That’s good for VT in the long run.
Now for the naysayers… coaching is more than pressers, true, but pressers are part of the job, and becoming more important in the media age. I doubt Franklin, fleck, saban, and the NFL hire guys that can’t develop at all. He can coach but agree he’s an unproven HC.
To the guys that say recruiting at bama is easy. He was still the best of the best, better than others that were at bama, Ohio State, lsu, Georgia, Clemson etc.
to those that say he only recruited 36th ranked class at Marshall. He’s first in his conference in year one. Every school has a high and low mark. Marshall’s low is 100 and high is probably 50. For example VT ceiling is probably 20ish and low is 50ish, he can maximize us and get us back in the top 25 where we should be.
He’s known as a respected, well liked, intelligent guy. It’s early on him but one of the better candidates out there. I want the guy to go into living rooms and say I recruited saquan, I recruited davante smith. You come with me, work your a$$ off, listen, do the right thing and we can succeed here in Blacksburg Virginia
