Simple solution: once the QB crosses the LOS, he's treated just like....


...anyone else with the ball in their hands. No special treatment! No extra penalties for hitting him once he starts the slide. Anyone who doesn't have their knee on the ground when the defensive player starts his tackle/hit lunge should be fair game.
