The Murphy vs Bede debate is a false choice. First off, most fans way
undervalued Bede, if not openly trashed him. That's dumb. He was a valuable player in many ways. Then a lot of fans overvalued Murphy (just because he had huge success in the SoCon and can shoot the 3). That's also dumb.
Bede was limited on offense. Period, end of story. But that doesn't mean he sucked and it doesn't mean he didn't contribute in significant ways to last year's success. People who tried to minimize his contributions don't understand that basketball is played on both ends of the floor.
Murphy is limited physically. Period, end of story. But that doesn't mean he sucks. Unfortunately all anyone focused on was his shooting ability (plus some on the fact that he handles the ball well and always has his head up). But they overlooked his physical limitations. Guess what, opposing coaches aren't going to overlook those. And Memphis laid out one blueprint (pressue him relentlessly with stronger, longer players, which was then followed by Xavier and UMd to varying degrees of success). Wake laid out another blueprint, which was that he can't defend very quick PGs.
Too bad this team can't have both Murphy and Bede. But until Young recruits players without physical limitations this is what we're stuck with.
