It's hard to appreciate just hearing it. When the aircraft would come in for a strafing run, it looked almost like they were coming right at you! They passed within 100 yards of you at probobaly about 1000' feet at the end of the run. The "Foul Line" was used to gauge whether the pass was valid, if they were firing past the foul line as they approached the targets, the pass was a scratch and no points were awarded. When you look at the clearances, it seems as if a stiff breeze could have sent a couple dozen rounds of 30 mike-mike into the observation tower!
Gave me an appreciation of what "Danger Close" calls are truly like.
