Why are we testing at all, exactly?

Not really looking to stir anything up here, but based on the policies associated with testing and the rationale behind them I am struggling to see the point.

Usually people are only testing if they have been exposed or are symptomatic. But by the time they test themselves, it's past the point at which one can make an argument for containment of the virus. The only real value is knowing exactly what you've got (Covid as opposed to some other disease). And even then there doesn't seem to be an immediate need to seek treatment from a medical professional unless you have a specific reason to do so (such as real complications or other underlying health issues) -- yet that's what a lot of people feel compelled to do, which places stress on the healthcare system.

So going back to my original point...what's the real value of testing?
