Creating a fourth division will not prevent the breakaway. It is too late. The major conferences will withdraw from the NCAA and I'm not sure there is enough unity among them to form a single new governance entity. There may be two new organizations and they will include any conferences who wish to join (P5, G5, others). They will be in competition with one another. The NCAA, if it continues to exist, will resemble the NAIA.
The NCAA is regarded by the major conferences as a money pit; an expensive obligation that consumes their basketball revenue and gives them gives little or nothing in return.
I imagine the new organization as a for-profit corporation which will generate money-making lines of business, one of which will be regulation/governance of collegiate sports. There is an obvious need for consulting and managing issues in NIL. Many other half-formed ideas occur to me.
In the previous thread, the headaches associated with the CFP expansion cause me to wonder if the conferences are pursuing expansion because it's good for college football or because of the malignant intrusion of ESPN into the planning, growth, and operation of college football. Do the conferences want this or is ESPN seducing the colleges with cash. That problem could be solved if the new organization created a dedicated college sports cable network serving its membership and any others who wish to commit their media rights; a replacement, in effect, for ESPN, owned by the conferences.
Some media rights contracts between now and 2026 will be negotiated with big changes in mind. Forget about P5, G5, and CPF. Everything is about to change. The ACC must find a way to scrap the current GoR in order to take advantage of the new way of running college sports.
