But those Iowa class battleships were beautiful ships.


And were true fast battleships. They were as fast as the carriers. Pretty heavily armed also, 9 16" main guns. Of course the IJN battleships of the Yamato class, of which there were 2, carried 9 18.1" guns.

Interesting factoid. Every battleship carried a detachment of Marines. The Marines provided security when docked. Plus they were trained to go from ship tp shore as landing parties. Plus one of the 5" gun mounts was manned by Marines, and carried the Marines Eagle, Globe and Anchor logo.
