Crimea should've been independent, and other two are breakaways
Ukraine annexed Crimea in 1990's after the latter first declared independence from Soviet Union and before Ukraine itself broke away. Crimea has voted twice to regain independence. It should be its own state, but it is essentially an Soviet naval base.
The others broke away after 2014 revolution and the new government tried to secure the provinces with the strongarm outfit Azov Battalion. They're not going to give in to a group that threatens genocide and torture, much like Alawites in Syria held out after ISIS and Al Qaeda threatened them with the same.
The borders for the two provinces aren't clean so there may be conflict to move the contact line back to restore DPR and LPR whole.
1500 shellings daily and an unhinged Ukraine president that openly tries to get nuclear devices. He goes back and forth on almost every issue. [Post edited by lchoro at 02/21/2022 4:12PM]
