Just got back from Maui

we were there Mar 10-18 and it was nearing the end of whale season. THAT was amazing - we saw whales every day from our condo and up close all 3 times we went on the water (whale watching tour, snorkeling trip, sunset cocktail cruise). If I were going to go back to Maui, I'd only do it Dec - mid March for the whales. The road to Hana drive on the south eastern coast was beautiful but in my opinion didn't compare to Kauai, which we visited about 10 yrs ago. Other than the whales and the Road to Hana, it felt like any other tropical beach destination (we admittedly did not go up Haleakala to see the sunrise, as it required a permit & getting up at 2am & the weather forecast didn't look so good).

We've been to Oahu, and spending a couple of days there to see Pearl Harbor was worth it to me. But other than that it all either felt like we were in a city that happened to have some beach front hotels, or any other tropical destination. I was glad we took an island hopper to Kauai because.

Kauai is definitely worthy of a repeat visit - - it has it all and feels unlike any place I'd ever been to. Awesome beaches, tropical areas, the Napali coastline, the valley that looks like the Grand Canyon, and all of it has the vibe like you're driving from one town of Floyd to another without any huge industrial feeling like we got on Oahu.

If you are going anytime soon, check the rental car rates as attentively as you are checking airfare and lodging. When 'rona hit all tourism stopped and the rental car companies lost / didn't replace their fleet. Prices are sky high. Thank goodness I could book with Hertz using a corporate rate so I only paid $350 for my 8 day rental vs. what would have been $1,400 without it.
