I had nothing to do with the sponsorship (several pay grades up from me)

but speaking from the Union side, the merger with Stellar helped in that it brought our footprint out to New River Valley. It also helps that the heart of our bank is in Richmond which is home to many VT alumni. Stellar was already heavily involved with VT athletics and I imagine Smoot & Steger had something to do with that involvement. the bank's relationship with the school has increased a lot since the acquisition to include some significant football sponsorship on top of basketball and a lot of academic work (Union/VT Innovation Challenge for example). The biggest plus side here is that VT is such a strong brand and one that aligns well with our own. Union is a decent size bank but not a behemoth and still very much a community bank. I'm biased, but I think this is a corporate sponsorship Tech fans can feel good about.
