Essentially

They go to a community college close to VT and still workout with the team, but are enrolled at NRVCC and taking classes. So they are around the program for a year, but their eligibility clock doesn't start until they enroll their freshman year at VT. I don't know how in depth the rules are for greyshirts and being in the wrestling room during the season, but i'd imagine it is a lot like football. With the SERTC I don't think it matters one way or another as they can workout with the team whenever they want.

A perfect example of this is Andrew Dunn. If he would have came straight to VT then he would have redshirted this year and would have lost next year because Ty is still around. This allowed him to spread that time out an extra year and he'll redshirt Ty's Senior year and come in when the spot is open as a RS-FR.
