The most logical reason would be money
Do Pitt and Syracuse (or whomever ends up being the 2 ACC schools) make more money splitting a pie 14/15 ways or splitting it 12 ways? If Pitt or Syracuse happen to join another conference for a sport (i.e. Big Ten for lax), then the school may get a small piece of that conference's pie for that particular sport too.
I am not necessarily advocating that 2 ACC schools leave the conference or necessarily think it would happen. However, if the ACC and Big XII worked out some sort of deal where the Big XII could have 2 ACC schools, then Pitt, Syracuse, and VT seem like they would be the Big XII's targets given their connection to WVU. I immediately eliminated VT given the connection to UVA, which narrowed the list down to Pitt and Syracuse.
