I've done parts of Billy Goat and Catoctin, and
all of the Merlin portion of the Appy Trail, plus the Appy Trail through Harper's Ferry. Going north from HF, the AT is a walkway attached to a railroad bridge. On the MD side, the AT goes eastward with the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath for about 3 miles, then breaks of northward to Weverton Cliffs, which is a pretty good climb.
The Catoctin Trail may be reached from US 15 north of Frederick, at the Manor Area part of Cunningham Falls State Park. You can either go north toward Catoctin Mountain Park and Camp David, or south toward Gambrill State Park. Either way, you will climb part of Catoctin Mountain.
