I don't disagree that a conference would agree to add some dead weight

if it meant adding a big fish. In the case of the SEC, it would be willing to add Okie Lite in order to add OU. However, I am not sure the SEC would go for your proposed pods though given that some of the rivalries have obtained sacred status within the SEC.

As far as the Big Ten goes, I believe it sees Kansas as a big enough fish (even factoring in men's basketball) to justify taking Kansas State too. The Big Ten may be willing to add Kansas, even though its market value may be minimal, and someone else (UConn could fit here).

If the Pac-12 can be convinced to add a religious affiliated school, then I would think BYU would be a more likely target than Baylor or TCU. What is going to be interesting to see play out with Baylor is how much support it gets from the state government. At one time a large percentage of state politicians are Baylor grads and it may still be the case today. However, since Baylor is private then the state government may insist a conference take another state school (i.e. Houston) over Baylor for political reasons.

Something else worth considering is the mega conferences may just be a means to an end. The 4 power conferences with 64 members stick together until they have clearly separate themselves far enough away from the pack to make it difficult for political intervention (federal or state level). At that point they break away and either stick together as 4 conferences or the 4 conferences break up into smaller conferences (probably no bigger than 10). I doubt any new schools would be allowed to join the party, but I guess that is always a possibility too. The conferences would still maintain a NFL-like model (even with its TV contracts) so there may be less need to have 12 or more members.
