Wake Forest is part of the Tobacco Road Clique

The ACC was formed in 1953 when Maryland approached UNC about breaking away from the Southern Conference over the post season bans. Maryland, Clemson, South Carolina and others wanted to break away from all of the small schools in the Southern Conference like VMI, Richmond, George Washington, etc.

They approached UNC to put together a new league because UNC had friends. Nobody liked or trusted Maryland. UNC agreed if they could bring their friends. Wake Forest is one of those, and they've been in the ACC ever since. UNC also approached UVA about joining. UVA did not trust or like Maryland at all, and at first UVA wasn't interested. But UNC talked UVA into joining, and we've been in the ACC ever since.

Wake Forest gets picked on because they aren't a football power in the ACC. But after beating FSU a few times, they have earned the right of the benefit of the doubt. They are investing in football facilities, so I'm fine with what Wake Forest is doing. They just kicked UVA's butt in men's tennis which no one else has done in a decade in the ACC. I have respect for Wake in other areas.
