VT needs to hire a coach that has a record of success as head coach, especially showing ability to recruit. Also, money needs to be provided to hire at least two assistants with proven experience and success at a competitive university. I could say all should meet this requirement, but some inexperience can be tolerated if one makes up for it in having experienced assistants.

I think the present staff is in over its head in the ACC because of lack of experience in competing at the highest level. This is the first head coaching job for Mason, and the assistants are young and relatively inexperienced.

Put all the factors together- inexperienced coaching staff, marginally competitive facilities, a climate equal to Notre Dame or Pittburgh, and it is tough (but certainly not impossible) for VT to compete in the ACC.
