It is true VT doesn't have a metro area like Houston or Dallas in its backyard, however, it does have a small school named Oak Hill where they can find a little talent and for its size Roanoke(JJ Redick, Curtis Staples, George Lynch) and surrounding areas has not been a total blank with talent either. Throw in Charlotte, Piedmont North Carolina,.. Richmond, DC and Tidewater and VT has access to a lot of talent in a reasonable, proximate geographic area. Continue rebuilding the basketball culture and throw in wins and location will not be a hindrance. Furthermore, win and Cassell becomes a snakepit with old school character like it was in the late 70's and early 80's as opposed to a decrepit old structure begging for a bulldozer, much like the old guy with money considered to be eccentric while without money he is just considered crazy.
