Using Google Maps Distance Measurer.

Distances from Cumberland Gap (furthest western point of Virginia) to state capitals "as the crow flies."

1. Frankfort, KY 130 miles
2. Charleston, WV 163 miles
3. Nashville, TN 185 miles
4. Atlanta, GA 204 miles
5. Columbia,SC 228 miles
6. Columbus, OH 233 miles
7. Indianapolis, IN 259 miles
8. Raleigh, NC 274 miles
9. Montgomery, AL 334 miles
10. Richmond, VA 341 miles

If you start from the heart of SW Virginia, there are 8 state capitals closer than Richmond, as you stated.
